Original Bora Visionary Painting on Llanchama Bark by Elmer Rodriguez

This extraordinary one-of-a-kind painting by Bora Indigenous artist Elmer Rodriguez presents a richly imagined encounter between a woman and the living Amazonian forest.

Painted in 2013 on traditional llanchama bark cloth, the long horizontal composition shows a reclining woman surrounded by dense tropical vegetation. Her body and clothing are covered with geometric designs and beadwork, while ceramic vessels rest beside her. At the right, a vividly patterned frog or toad appears among the leaves, releasing pale flowing streams that arc toward the vessels and the woman.

The imagery is strikingly dreamlike. Human, animal, plant, and possibly medicinal or spiritual elements seem to occupy the same world. The painting may suggest transformation, healing, communication with forest beings, or relationships among people, animals, plants, and traditional knowledge.

About the artist

Elmer Rodriguez is a Bora Indigenous artist from the Peruvian Amazon. At the time he created this painting, he was living in Brillo Nuevo, a Bora community on the Ampiyacu River in the northern Peruvian Amazon.

Rodriguez comes from a family with a notable artistic tradition. His brother, Darwin Rodriguez, is also a Bora painter whose works have been exhibited in Iquitos, Lima, Denmark, and other international venues.

Traditional llanchama bark cloth

Rather than conventional canvas, the painting is made on llanchama, a traditional Amazonian bark cloth produced from the inner bark of forest trees.

The natural fibers, slightly irregular surface, warm off-white color, and uneven edges of the llanchama remain visible around the painted image and form an integral part of the artwork. These characteristics give the painting a physical connection to the forest represented within it.

This is an original hand-painted work, not a print or reproduction.

Display and framing

The painting is sold unframed, allowing the collector to select a presentation appropriate to the room and to the natural character of the llanchama.

A professional framer experienced with textiles, works on paper, or other flexible materials could mount the painting using reversible methods or place it in a shadow-box style frame that allows the irregular natural edges of the bark cloth to remain visible.
