This is Yermeth Torres - an artisan from the campesino village of Chino on the Tahuayo River in the northern Peruvian Amazon. She is one of the talented artisans who weaves chambira palm fiber into beautiful decorative baskets colored with natural plant dyes. Buying these baskets helps provide a source of sustainable income for artisan families like Yermeth. CACE social rebates from craft sales have helped build a new bathroom for the school, buy medicines, support chambira reforestation and finish construction of the artisan cooperative building.

One of CACE's closest allies is Robin van Loon and Camino Verde - the group he founded to promote reforestation in the southern Peruvian Amazon. We have worked together to plant rosewood trees in one of our partner native communities and are exploring how to market a joint line of aromatic essential oils. Robin and Campbell are members of the board of directors of both groups to foster this cooperation. Please support our work with a donation on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29 at www.AmazonAlive.net. The Gates Foundation will provide a 50% match to donations made to us through GlobalGiving on that day as long as matching funds last. The clock starts at midnight on Nov. 29. CACE has learned to sustainably harvest copal resin and distill it to produce a high value essential oil. This will help forest people in the Peruvian Amazon a way to make money from the forest without harming it. by Center for Amazon Community Ecology November 18, 2016

We continue with the research work at Copal. On this occasion we made the transfer of bowling from one tree to another at the Centro de Investigaciones de Jenaro Herrera (CIJH) run by Instituto de Investigación de la Amazonia Peruana (IIAP).

The action of a weevil, a member of the beetle family (Coleoptera), is normally responsible for the formation of resin masses in these trees. The process begins when a female places her egg inside the cortex. When hatching, the larva eats the inner crust and causes the liquid resin to escape into the outer crust which is known as a bolus.

The objective of this research is to know the adaptation and survival of the weevil by changing it, observing the results over time.

CACE featured many of our insect ornaments hand-made by campesino artisans from the town of Jenaro Herrera on the Ucayali River in the Peruvian Amazon.
