by Center for Amazon Community Ecology June 08, 2017

Please join our Amazon roadshow this September at the Rhythm and Roots Festival at Ninigret Park for three days of music and fun. CACE will have a big booth to sell our innovative fair-trade handicrafts made by our partner artisans from Peru and offer visitors a rich interactive educational experience of the Amazon rainforest and its people.

CACE needs a few energetic volunteers to help us set up the booth on Thursday as well to pack up on Sunday night. We would also like to recruit a few Amazon Ambassadors to help us sell crafts and welcome booth visitors to check out our videos and engage with our Amazon education activities during the festival.

We have one or extra free vendor passes to the festival that we can share with volunteers who help us for several days or more. All volunteers who help us for a full day or more will get a 20% discount on merchandise at our booth and a free Amazon Forest Store baseball cap as a gesture of our appreciation.

Wonderful to sell a batch of balsa turtle, armadillo and other Amazon wildlife ornaments to several fair trade shops at this year's conference of the Fair Trade Federation in Louisville, KY. Our first buyer was Andrea Gronau - manager of the non-profit Worldly Goods shop in Ames, Iowa. Also pictured here is one of the ornament carvers David Andrade - Bora artisan from Brillo Nuevo. The sloth is also a popular model.

by Center for Amazon Community Ecology February 28, 2017

People in the Amazon depend on many resources from the forest, fields and rivers for their food. These include the beautiful striped catfish called sungaro, the armored carachama and plantains. I enjoyed them all during my recent visit to the village of Chino on the Tahuayo River - the same place where artisans make beautiful woven baskets and other crafts. Please check them out at www.AmazonForestStore.org.

by Center for Amazon Community Ecology February 26, 2017

I arrived in Iquitos last Monday and left for the village of Chino on the Tahuayo River on Tuesday. During my visit at this time last year, the village was completely flooded - a normal event during the rainy season - but this has been a particularly dry season so far. It was great to meet with the artisans again and discuss ideas for new crafts they could make for the Center for Amazon Community Ecology to sell at our new online store (www.amazonforeststore.org). While they have a nice new house to meet, work and display their crafts to visitors (built with support from Amazon Expeditions and CACE), the eco-tourism lodge upriver has had relatively few guests to bring by to buy their crafts in the past four months. We are going to try and help them improve their marketing by producing photos of the artisans they can put in their center, develop their brand based on their association name (Manos Amazonicas = Amazon Hands), and include them in the second Artisan Leadership Program workshop we will hold at the end of March. More about my visit to Chino tomorrow.
