PELICAN BIRD FAIR-TRADE CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENTS - WOVEN BY PERUVIAN AMAZON ARTISAN

This unique fair-trade ornament represents the brown pelican.  This bird may look gangly when walking, but it is a graceful scene to witness a flock of pelicans flying in unison before suddenly folding its wings and plummeting into the ocean to catch one or more fish in the expanding pouch attached to its lower beak.  This bird which was once close to extinction when consumption of DDT laden fish weakened the shell of its eggs, but it has recovered well since the pesticide was banned in the US.  This ornament will be a great addition to your Christmas tree, rear-view mirror or any place you want a powerful reminder of a true come-back bird.

These ornaments were woven with chambira palm fiber by a native Amazon artisan. The sale of these ornaments supports forest conservation and helps meet local needs in traditional communities in Peru. These bird ornaments were made artisans from the village on the Maranon River.

Each ornament comes with a tag listing the name and home of the artisan who made it and the plants used to make it.

Please remember that each ornament was hand-made so the exact design of the craft may vary from the photo shown for this model.
